Rockland School of Ballet: The Contemporary Movement

Rockland • Maine

Story

Rockland School of Ballet was founded nearly 20 years to spread the gift and love of dance to our small community. Now, many years later we are growing and thriving as we continue to offer ballet and contemporary dance in a fun, safe, educational and nurturing environment. We strive to be the studio where students not only feel at home, but well taken care of, and when they walk out of our doors they know they have learned something.

The Contemporary Movement was founded as a company division of Rockland School of Ballet. It was created with a vision of providing the midcoast Maine dance community space to come together and dance without judgement and reservation. The Contemporary Movement provides dancers with a place to explore their passion, develop technique, and assimilate creativity. Each month dancers enter the studio and begin by discussing a current social issue. After gaining an understanding of the topic at hand, dancers learn a choreographed piece internalizing the movement, making it their own and sharing their story through dance.

The Contemporary Movement at Rockland School of Ballet offers students a safe, nurturing environment to hone their craft while continuing to develop their technique. In addition to regular classes and rehearsals, students are brought into the community to lead by example, telling stories and sharing experiences through the art of dance. Each project is captured on film and turned into a short documentary, after editing it is displayed online as our contribution to resolving and standing up for the issue at hand.

We believe that the children and youth are the future of tomorrow. They are bright, brilliant, creative and wonderful human beings, through the art of dance at Rockland School of Ballet they share their gifts and passion to not just our community but the world at large.
