I have always struggled with mental disorders such as depression, severe anxiety, and self esteem issues. Dance has given me a release from these feelings that does not cause me pain or harm, and the confidence to be happy with myself, even if it is only in the studio or on stage. I have been studying many styles of dance for 12 years now, and I have found that ballet, contemporary and lyrical styles are the most effective for portraying what I want during a performance. I have often found myself to be an outsider in groups; almost as if I do not add anything to the effect and it wouldn't matter if I left, but, even though I currently only ever dance as part of a troupe, I feel as if I belong there. I have found more friends through the dance community than I ever would have outside of it, and they are like a second family to me. They have all been incredibly supportive of me on my journey to recovery so far, even to the point where I am beginning to take solo classes this year. Dance is my everything, and without it, I probably wouldn't be here to share this story.
